My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)
"All That I Am", from the soundtrack to the film Spinout, is typical of Elvis' movie soundtrack ballads from the mid-60s. The songwriting team of Tepper and Bennett were notorious for cranking out the silliest soundtrack tunes, but they were best when they stuck to ballads. This melody is pleasant enough, sung quite well, but it just sounds like Elvis could've done better. He was quite capable of elevating songs like this when he gave it a shot. You can't help but wonder what Elvis might have done with a song like this if he'd been in the studio with a producer like Felton Jarvis or Chet Atkins working on a regular album, instead of cranking out another Hollywood soundtrack.

Still, Elvis manages to hold his own, crooning with the best of them, and even getting into the Top Ten on the Easy-Listening charts! So, if you suddenly get an urge to listen to the King Of Rock N Roll doing a lounge song from the mid-60s, you could do a lot worse than digging out your copy of "All That I Am"!

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"'All That I Am' is a slow Bossa Nova, with a Spanish-guitar opening, very well sung..."

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music icon, 1979

"All That I Am" Lyrics and Downloads

All that I am or ever hope to be
Lies in your hands
You are my destiny
When you are in my arms, I rule the world
And when were far apart, how cruel the world

All that I want is to be near to you
To spend my life making it clear to you
You are my heart, my soul, my dream come true
All that I am, I am because of you

All that I want is to be near to you
To spend my life making it clear to you
You are my heart, my soul, my dream come true
All that I am, I am because of you

Because of you
Because of you
