My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

Elvis recreated Chuck Willis' rhythm & blues classic "I Feel So Bad" practically note for note! Elvis' faithfulness to the original, however, is more than a mere copy. He sinks his teeth into the song, and seems to be having a great time, letting out a whoop before the sax instrumental. Doesn't sound to me like he "feels so bad"! By the way, Boots Randolph on sax, Floyd Cramer on piano, and D.J. Fontana on drums don't seem to be in a bad mood either!

More to come later, meanwhile, check out the music and links!

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"I Feel So Bad" is quite different, with phrases from guitar and piano propelling it.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

Bluesy, but delivered at a furious pace with great flourish by Elvis and superb drumming by D.J. Fontana.

The Complete Elvis, edited by Martin Torgoff, 1982

Feel so bad, feel like a ball game on a rainy day
Feel so bad, feel like a ball game on a rainy day
Guess I got my rain check
Shake my head and walk away

Ooooo, people that's the way I feel
Ooooo, people that's the way I feel
Sometimes I think I won't
Then again I think I will

Sometimes I want to stay here, then again I want to leave
Sometimes I want to leave here, then again I want to stay
Guess I got my train fare
Pack my grip and ride away

Ooooo, people that's the way I feel
Ooooo, people that's the way I feel
Sometimes I think I won't
Then again I think I will
