My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

It may be just an ordinary run-o-the-mill country tune to some, but I've always liked "Mr. Songman". I'm a sucker for Elvis playing the part of just another lead singer in a harmony group. Here he blends in nicely with the backing vocalists, one of whom is the song's composer Donnie Sumner.

I'll add some more later, but meanwhile check out the music and links.

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

Presley is relaxed in "Mr. Songman", but the drawback is the song.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

A variation on the theme of "Love Song Of The Year" - shallow, but it moves along.

Martin Torgoff, The Complete Elvis, 1982

"Mr. Songman" Lyrics and Downloads

Here's another dime for you, Mr. Songman
Sing the loneliness of broken dreams away, if you can
Yes it's only me and you, Mr. Songman
Take away the night sing away my hurt, Mr. Songman

In your ivory covered palace, safe behind your walls of glass
You keep staring back at me like a memory from the past
Won't you sing me away to a summer night
Let me hold you in my arms again
I know memory's not re-living
But at least it's not the end

Here's another dime for you Mr. Songman
Sing the loneliness of broken dreams away, if you can
Yes it's only me and you, Mr. Songman
Won't you take away the night, sing away my hurt, Mr. Songman

Won't you sing me away to a summer night
Let me hold her in my arms again
Take away the night sing away my hurt, Mr. Songman
