My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

Elvis had not yet recorded it in the studio when he performed "Peace In The Valley" on his third appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (he would record it a week later). The world would soon figure out this wasn't just a bad-boy rocker trying to make a good impression. This rock-n-roll kid actually loved gospel music! Although his version of "Peace In The Valley" would closely follow the arrangement of the 1951 hit by Red Foley, Elvis uses his deep baritone to add resonance and power to the melody. Add in the Jordanaires' backing vocals, and it's a great moment of early Elvis gospel.

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"Peace In The Valley", the main reason for these sessions, is a religious blues number. This is a remarkable recording: with no extraneous background effects, one can judge the quality of Presley's voice. He sings with great sincerity. His voice has great reserves of strength, yet is supple, and used with intelligence.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

Elvis' first sacred classic at RCA, with superb support from the Jordanaires.

"Peace In The Valley" Lyrics and Downloads

Oh well, I'm tired and so weary
But I must go alone
Till the lord comes and calls, calls me away, oh yes
Well the morning's so bright
And the lamb is the light
And the night, night is as black as the sea, oh yes

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow
No trouble, trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me, for me

Well the bear will be gentle
And the wolves will be tame
And the lion shall lay down by the lamb, oh yes
And the beasts from the wild
Shall be led by a child
And I'll be changed, changed from this creature that I am, oh yes

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow
No trouble, trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me, for me
