My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

An infectious little tune with an awkward title, "Please Don't Drag That String Around" has a melody and shuffling beat that bounces along nicely, as you'd expect from an Otis Blackwell / Winfield Scott song. I'm a sucker for the clean but full sound of Elvis' early '60s recordings, and I think this one is a fine example. Makes a nice single with "Devil In Disguise", but for some reason, this flip-side didn't make the charts. Maybe that weird title scared everyone away. :)

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"Please Don't Drag That String Around" is a good up-tempo number pushed along by a fruity saxophone line. In spite of its qualities, this song lacks an immediate hook, as one might expect from a number used as a fill-up in a film soundtrack.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

A tame, medium rocker - good sound, but without the bite of the earlier stuff.

The Complete Elvis, edited by Martin Torgoff, 1982

"Please Don't Drag That String Around" Lyrics and Downloads

You like to keep me dangling on a string
'Cause you know without you my life don't mean a thing

So I beg you
Please don't drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
Oh, tell me, what would I do then
Keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end

Yes, I'm your puppet, my heart is in your hand
One twist of the wrist and I jump to your command

So I beg you
Please don't drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
What would I do then
Baby, keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end

I feel inside me, as sure as anything
One day I'll mean more to you than a puppet on a string

So I beg you
Please don't drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
Oh, tell me, what would I do then
Keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end
