In an interview in 1959, Elvis cited "My Wish Came True" as his own favorite of the two sides of his current single. For the record, I disagree. Sorry Elvis, but it doesn't hold a candle to "A Big Hunk O' Love". He was probably prouder of his ballads than his rockers around that time, since he wanted to be more than a rock 'n' roll singer, so maybe he played down the rockers. For "My Wish Came True", there's no denying he gets an A for effort. Elvis did 28 takes in the first session, then tried again on two more sessions, although it was the last take from the first session that was eventually released. To me, though, this was just a fair ballad, nothing outstanding, especially considering Ivory Joe Hunter's songs usually are! |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)Another slow ballad, "My Wish Came True" is similar to "Don't", but not so successful. The Jordanaires gospel-harmonies take the spotlight. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 An early RCA gem with nicely layered choral backing by the Jordanaires. My wish came true When I met you I've searched and searched My whole life through There's just one thing Dear before we start Don't say you care Then break my heart When you speak of love Please be sincere For if you play with love It can bring tears my dear My wish came true To my surprise When you stood there before my eyes And when my heart Started beating fast Twas then I knew I found true love at last |
