I'm sure Mark James didn't have Elvis in mind as the singer when he wrote "Raised On Rock", since it tells the story of a young fan of the music, "listening to the music that his idols made". That the song should be sung by one of those idols himself is a little strange. Then again, Waylon Jennings later did the same kind of thing in "Luchenbach Texas", singing about "Waylon, Willie and the boys", so, why not!... The bass rhythm and the guitar accents give the intro a bit of a Native American sound, which is a great hook, and Elvis' singing is good, but not great. He doesn't really seem into it. |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)The Stax influence is also noticeable in "Raised On Rock": the bass line, brilliently played by Tommy Cogbill, is worthy of special mention. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 Strident guitar, thudding bass, and some mean back-up vocals by Misses Westmoreland, Holladay and Holladay, made this song about the "idol" who sang "Hound Dog" attractive but strangely remote. I remember as a child I used to hear Music that they played Lord with a feel' Some call it folk, some call it soul People let me tell you it was rock and roll I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul Every day when I got home I turned on my radio Listening to the music that my idols made I knew every single record the DJ's played A honky tonk a Hound Dog, a Johnny B. Goode Chain Gang, Love Is Strange, Knock On Wood I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul I was born to love the beat I was made for rock and roll Some thought it was a fad, thought it would pass But the younger generation knew it would last Time's gone by, the beat goes on But every time I hear it Lord it takes me home I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul Every day when I got home I turned on my radio Mother played recordings of Beethoven's Fifth Mozart's sonatas down the classical list My papa loved to listen to his country songs While I was in the back room rockin' on* I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul I was born to love the beat I was made for rock and roll I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul I was born to love the beat I was made for rock and roll I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul *Johnny Winter's version of this, the line is changed to "in the back room, diggin' the Stones". Not sure which line was in Mark James' original lyrics. |
