| Some non-Americans (and even some Americans!) apparently don't get what it means to be "rubberneckin'". OK, I'll fill ya in. It means he's a girl-watcher, and he's always stretchin' his neck to ogle the women, get it? Not sure that info will enlighten anyone, but there ya go. Although recorded at a non-soundtrack session (the same American Studios sessions that gave us "In The Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds"), "Rubberneckin'" was used in Elvis' last acting film, Change of Habit. Consequently, the song is a notch above the rest of the soundtrack, which was recorded at a separate session specially for the film. The song is funky and upbeat, with the female background vocals adding spice, and some nice hand-clap breaks in there to change up the pacing a bit. The 2003 remix doesn't do much for me. Unlike "A Little Less Conversation", it doesn't really "update" the song for new audiences, and certainly doesn't improve on the original. |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"Rubberneckin'" is a fun song, sung by Presley with an attractive 'tight' quality. The brass playing is good and the infectious atmosphere urgent and zappy becomes very infectious. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 From Change of Habit, an offbeat, energetic film rocker gussied up with the musicians from the Memphis sessions. Horns, wailing females, and Elvis belting out some lackluster lyrics. Somehow, he makes it all appealing.
