Elvis covered three Little Richard songs on his second album, but his first album contained his take on "Tutti Frutti", Richard's manic first hit! There's no way Elvis could've outshined Richard's performance, but he does manage to make it a wild ride, a little faster in tempo and completely in line with the rockabilly style that Elvis, Scotty and Bill had now perfected. If the famous flip-side was Elvis taking a rockabilly tune and making it rock-n-roll, then "Tutti Frutti" was the reverse. |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"Tutti Frutti" [is] another incomparable performance. Presley's vocal work is sensational; anybody who wants to be a rock singer should study each inflection of this recording. The fierce beat is sustained with solid power; above it the guitar flickers intermittently until it breaks out in the fiery solo. The ending - a genuine early touch of echo - is quite astonishing. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 Elvis took Little Richard's smash head-on; the result was something as crazed, but not as awe-inspiring. Still, loads of fun.
