My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)
Chosen as the flip side of the mega-hit "Suspicious Minds", the mid-tempo ballad "You'll Think Of Me" has been mostly ignored over the years, a fate it doesn't deserve. Almost all of Elvis' recordings from this session in Memphis are worth getting to know for the quality of his voice at this time and the energy he brought to the songs, and this one especially merits attention. Elvis takes this story of a man leaving his woman and injects enough spirit and respect that he saves it from being just another "I'm-a-ramblin'-guy-and-I-gotta-move-on" tune. Instead it becomes one of genuine consoling of the singer toward the one left behind. Add an alluring melody to this mix and it's pretty irresistible.

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

In "You'll Think Of Me", there is a strangely disconnected opening, which gradually builds to the basic tempo. The song, which lasts almost four minutes, is long for the material, but Presley manages to hold it together through the layers of sound.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

From the Memphis Sessions, a solid lyric and an interesting arrangement with subtle tempo changes.

Martin Torgoff, The Complete Elvis, 1982

Mort Shuman's "You'll Think Of Me" opens with Reggie Young on Sitar instead of guitar and it's that instrument that takes the lead throughout the song, providing an exotic counterpoint to the perhaps the most soulful vocal performance Elvis ever gave. The song was used as the b-side to the legendary Suspicious Minds and had remained all but hidden in the years since it's release. It is perhaps the great lost jewel in Elvis' crown, listening to it now it's hard to imagine a singer more in tune with all that a song can symbolically give. No-one, not even Sinatra at his most impassioned, has melded together with a song like this one. This song is Elvis Presley.

Jeremy Richey, Dust Off Those Grooves (Chapter Seven), review of the Back In Memphis album.

His rendition of Mort Shuman's "You'll Think of Me" is a soaring, passionate record, Elvis' voice lofted over a soul chorus and a brass- and dobro-dominated accompaniment, all carrying one of the prettiest melodies that he ever sang.

-from the AllMusic review of the Back in Memphis album.

I'm sorry now girl but I must leave you
There's something deep inside my soul keeps calling me
The winter wind girl will not deceive you
And in your cold and empty bed, you'll think of me, oh yes
You'll think of me

You'll see me coming, you'll see me going
Don't ask me why, I'm just the kind needs to be free
Just like that outlaw wind keeps on a-blowin'
Yeah, in your cold and empty bed, you'll think of me, oh yes
You'll think of me

Now I know you loved me just like I wanted
I know you'd follow me across an endless sea
But baby I've got a heart that's haunted
Yeah, in your cold and empty bed, you'll think of me, oh yes
You'll think of me

Ah but you should know girl that I'll be crying
Out on that lonely road where not a soul can see
I'll shed my tears for a love that's dying
Yeah, in your cold and empty bed, you'll think of me, oh yes
You'll think of me

The summer sun girl will bring a stranger
And he'll be better to you than I used to be
And when he takes you into his arms girl
Well, in your warm and loving bed, you won't think of me, no, no
You won't think of me

Then in your warm and loving bed, you won't think of me, no, no
You won't think of me
