Sam Phillips was enjoying the success of his first two single releases with Elvis, but one thing still bothered him: He had to give away some of his earnings because he didn't own publishing rights to any of the songs. He had been telling his friend Jack Sallee how he wanted to get an original song for Elvis to record and a few days later Jack wrote one and demo'd it for Sam. "You're a Heartbreaker" was much more of a mainstream country tune than anything else Elvis had recorded so far, but even so those two lines starting with "For I just found someone else..." sound like he's kicking it into rockabilly gear! Elvis has already learned enough to vocally experiment a little throughout and gives it a solid performance. Although the other side of the single got more attention, Sam couldn't have been too disappointed with this one considering he got his publishing and the rest of us got a decent recording, even if it might pale alongside other Sun classics! |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)In "You're a Heartbreaker" Presley's voice takes on a different quality: it is lower in pitch, and seems flawed by phasing and echo, which produce a washy and sibilant result.
