My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

Although flip-side "Little Sister" is probably more well-known in the States, "His Latest Flame" was the hit side in Europe, and made it to #1 in the UK. It's a nice infectious Bo-Diddley/shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits rhythm, and catchy melody, together with the story of a broken-hearted guy whose old girlfriend has a new guy, and Elvis has to listen to the new guy go on about it! ...Bummer!

Stay tuned, I'll write more later, but meanwhile check out the music and links!

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"His Latest Flame", a classic recording of a fine song by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, tells a story - like "The Girl Of My Best Friend". It is propelled by an original rocking beat, and the words are more important than in most rockers. Presley sings with power and ease. The piano part (presumably Floyd Cramer) adds the finishing touch.

"His Latest Flame" Lyrics and Downloads

A very old friend came by today
'Cause he was telling everyone in town
About the love that he just found
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

He talked and talked and I heard him say
That she had the longest blackest hair
The prettiest green eyes anywhere
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning
I wished him luck and then he said goodbye
He was gone but still his words kept returning
What else was there for me to do but cry

Would you believe that yesterday
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
She'd be mine eternally
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning
I wished him luck and then he said goodbye
He was gone but still his words kept returning
What else was there for me to do but cry

Would you believe that yesterday
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
She'd be mine eternally
And Marie's the name of his latest flame
