My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

If it had secular lyrics, "Milky White Way" could easily fit alongside Elvis' other early '60s hits as a fine mid-tempo pop song. As it is, it's a standout tune from Elvis' first full-length gospel album, His Hand In Mine. The line with the "Howdy, howdy" may bring a chuckle, but hey, it's an old gospel song, you can't expect it to be totally hip. Mind you, under custody of Elvis and the Jordanaires, it comes pretty close!

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

It is the Jordanaires who shine in "Milky White Way" (the first song recorded at the sessions) against Presley's relaxed, balanced solos.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

Sacred standard done easily as a medium rocker.

Martin Torgoff, The Complete Elvis, 1982

"Milky White Way" Lyrics and Downloads

Yes I'm gonna walk, oh, the milky white way
Oh Lord some of these days
I'm gonna walk that milky white way
Some of these days well well well well
I'm gonna walk up and take my stand
Gonna join that Christian band
I'm gonna walk, oh, that milky white way
Oh Lord, some of these days

I'm gonna tell my mother howdy
Howdy, howdy, when I get home
Yes, I'm gonna tell my mother howdy
When I get home well well well well
I'm gonna shake my mother's hand
I will shake her hands that day
That's when we walk, oh, that milky white way
On some of these days

I'm gonna meet god the father and god the son
Yes, I'm gonna meet god the father and god the son
Well well well well
I'm gonna sit down and tell Him my troubles
About the world that I just came from
That's when we walk, oh, that milky white way
Oh Lord, on some of these days
