If "Baby Let's Play House" is pure rockabilly, and I think it is, then "Good Rockin' Tonight" is one of Elvis' first examples of pure rock-n-roll! His second single from Sun Records, and a tune that, through his live performances, would establish him as a "rock-n-roller" throughout the South! I'll have some more to say later, but meanwhile cruise the music, videos and links! |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"Good Rockin' Tonight" is one of the most important of Presley's Sun recordings. As the title implies, it is early rock, but is of more than historical interest. For the first time, the versatility of Presley's voice is revealed on disc: strong, rich, and deep, yet capable of a wide range of timbres. The progress since the July sessions is startling - particularly when one realizes that this high-energy music was created by just three people - without drums. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 The quintessential invitation to rock, Elvis-style. The song he sang with a guitar all over Memphis, on flat-bed trucks and in dance hall auditoriums throughout the South. Recorded by Sam Phillips with plenty of echo reverb for his Sun label in September of 1954.
