It may not be on the mythic level of other Sun Studio classics, but "I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine" is still a fun song where Elvis shows his playful side. Tony Martin released the first recording, and Patti Page had the biggest hit with the tune, but it was one of Elvis' early idols Dean Martin that most heavily influences Elvis' recording. Dino's version can be heard and seen in the Martin/Lewis film Scared Stiff. Mind you, Elvis' take on this is sped up a little and sprinkled here and there with a few rockabilly hiccups, and he seems to be really getting into it, especially that bridge "kiss and a-kiss and a-kiss..." and a full stop at "makes me holler -- 'More! More more more'". These boys are havin' a blast! By the way, that percussion is not bongos and it's not D.J. Fontana, but someone (possibly Buddy Cunningham) playing on an empty record box! This was also a song that wasn't released on album until 1976's Sun Sessions release. Until then, it was only available if you could track down the original 45s or the Any Way You Want Me EP. |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine" is unusual in including bongos - possibly played by D.J. Fontana, who had been a member of Presley's stage band for some time. The song is similar to the faster version of "Blue Moon of Kentucky", but less innovative. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 From Elvis' second Sun Session, a fast tempo ballad with a laughing-voiced Elvis giving his all.
