My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

When I first got my copy of Gold Records Vol 4, I didn't care much for this ballad, but I admit that over the years I've grown to like it. Elvis was in fine form during this recording session, and gave proper attention to this ballad, as he moves from singing quietly and softly during the main sections and projecting powerfully during the couplets preceding the title line. Well, when I first bought the album I was a young'un, what did I know about serious grown-up ballads?

I'll get around to saying some more later, but in the meantime, go ahead and check out the videos, music and links!

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"Indescribably Blue" [is] a slow ballad which begins in Mediterranean sytle with tremulous guitar. This powerful song is sung appropriately. The solo female singer (possibly Millie Kirkham) adds a poignant touch, and Henry Slaughter on organ gives further instrumental colour.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

Plenty of schmaltz: mandolin, organ, guitars, piano, but it's all carefully woven. Elvis curls his voice nicely up from the bass tones to overtake the Jords and Imperials and really makes this one his own.

Martin Torgoff, The Complete Elvis, 1982

"Indescribably Blue" Lyrics and Downloads

Our friends all ask me
The last time I saw you
And I smile and tell them
It's been a day or two

There's no way to explain it
The way that I miss you
And my love, you have left me
Indescribably blue

I talk to your picture
My favorite one of you
I wish that you were here with me
But what good will it do

Having no way to tell you
The pain that I've been through
Oh, my love, you have left me
Indescribably blue
Yes, my love, you have left me
Indescribably blue
