Although earlier versions of "Such A Night" by the Drifters and Johnnie Ray had caught some flack for being too suggestive, it's Elvis' version that really steams! The appeal is in no small part due to Elvis just playfully letting loose with it, giving the impression that it's all in fun, but there's nothing in the vocal performance that's subpar. Elvis is in top form, which heightens the intensity of the middle break ("I gave my heart to her in sweet surrender") and the breathy oohs and ahhs at the end, in both cases, outdoing the previous versions. That bluesy drum-solo flourish is a nice final touch, too. I'll add some more later, but meanwhile check out the music and links. |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)Vastly different material is found on "Such A Night" - a curious choice, for it had been a world-wide hit for Johnnie Ray a half-dozen or more years earlier. Presley's performance is disappointing: had he recorded this number before he went into the army, then he would have made a better job of it. Presley had trouble recording this, which accounts for the nature of the standard release. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 An oldie but goodie, via Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters (1954) and Johnny Ray (a risque cut banned in 1954). A delicious, panting bit of nonsense that bounces along - Elvis obviously had fun here. Martin Torgoff, The Complete Elvis, 1982 ...As for the Johnny Ray number, which Ray handled dead-pan, Elvis bucks up the pace, salts the sex with some humour, and turns it into something immaculate. It was a night, Oh what a night it was It really was such a night The moon was bright oh how so bright It was it really was such a night The night was alight with stars above Oh when she kissed me I had to fall in love Oh it was a kiss, Oh what a kiss it was It really was such a kiss Oh how she could kiss, oh what a kiss it was It really was such a kiss Just the thought of her lips sets me afire I reminisce and I'm filled with desire But I'd gave my heart to her in sweet surrender How well I remember, I'll always remember Oh, what a night, Oh what a night it was It really was such a night Came the dawn and my heart and her love And the night was gone But I'll never forget that kiss, that kiss in the moonlight Oh such a kiss, such a night It was a night, Oh what a night it was It really was such a night Came the dawn and my heart and her love And the night was gone But I'll never forget that kiss That kiss in the moonlight How well I remember, I'll always remember That night, Oh what a night it was It really was such a night When we kissed I had to fall in love But I'd gave my heart to her in sweet surrender How well I remember, I'll always remember Oh that night Oh what a night it was It really was such a night When we kissed I had to fall in love Well she's gone, gone, gone Yes she's gone, gone, gone Came the dawn, dawn, dawn And my love was gone But before that dawn Yes before that dawn and before that dawn Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh Such a night |
