My Spin

(Just my opinion. Give us yours!)

"Suspicion" was one of the highlights of the classic Pot Luck album in 1962. Terry Stafford took a slightly rearranged version to #3 on the pop charts in 1964. RCA tried to capitalize by releasing Elvis' version on a single but it didn't chart. Who cares? His original version still runs rings around Stafford's. The rhythmic background melody is probably running around your brain right now, isn't it?

I'll be writing more later, but meanwhile check out the music and links.

Other Spins

(What did the critics and fans say?)

"Suspicion", a fine number, which was a big hit for Terry Stafford in 1964, is not the outstanding performance Presley could have given.

Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979

Commercial offering that delighted Elvis fans everywhere (so much so that it gave advent to Elvis sound-alike Terry Stafford, who recorded the song in 1964 and made it a smash). The sort of melody that Dean Martin turned out by the carload, but there was Elvis and the Jordanaires pulsing in the background, it was... well, different.

Martin Torgoff, The Complete Elvis, 1982

"Suspicion" Lyrics and Downloads

Ev'rytime you kiss me I'm still not certain that you love me
Ev'ry time you hold me I'm still not certain that you care
Though you keep on saying you really, really, really love me
Do you speak the same words to someone else when I'm not there

Suspicion torments my heart
Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion, why torture me

Ev'rytime you call me and tell me we should meet tomorrow
I can't help but think that you're meeting someone else tonight
Why should our romance just keep on causing me such sorrow?
Why am I so doubtful whenever you're out of sight?

Darling, if you love me, I beg you wait a little longer
Wait until I drive all these foolish fears out of my mind
How I hope and pray that our love will keep on growing stronger
Maybe I'm suspicious 'cause true love is so hard to find
