| Elvis was already no stranger to sad ballads, but in the early '70s, they became one of his main strengths. Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Until It's Time For You To Go" is a great example. The arrangement is simple and sparse through the verses with strings providing light emphasis during the bridge. Elvis' vocals are front and center, telling the story of a brief romance beginning to fade. Although much has been made of Elvis going through troubles with Priscilla around this time as an explanation for the switch of focus to more ballads (and there's certainly some truth to that), it's also obvious that he was just maturing and was more attracted to that material anyway. In any case, we're all a little better off for it, if it produced fine performances like this! |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"Until It's Time For You To Go" became a classic hit for Presley and this performance is one of his best. He infuses each word with an added meaning. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 Elvis turned Buffy's 1970 version of her own folksy composition into a ballad with piano and strings nicely complemented by the Imperials. The lyrics are stretched and phrased beautifully. You're not a dream, you're not an angel, you're a woman I'm not a king, I'm just a man, take my hand We'll make a space in this life that we planned And here we'll stay until it's time for you to go Yes, we're different, worlds apart, we're not the same We laughed and played at the start like in a game You could have stayed outside my heart, but in you came And here you'll stay until it's time for you to go Don't ask why, don't ask how Don't ask forever, love me Love me, love me, love me now This love of mine had no beginning, it has no end I was an oak, now I'm a willow, now I can bend And though I'll never in my life see you again And still (here) I'll stay until it's time for you to go Don't ask why, don't ask how Don't ask forever, love me Love me, love me, love me now This love of mine had no beginning, it has no end I was an oak, now I'm a willow, now I can bend And though I'll never in my life see you again And still (here) I'll stay until it's time for you to go Yes, I'll stay until it's time for you to go |
