Part of Elvis' "pre-comeback" period of late-'67/early-'68 when he was itching to break out of his movie-soundtrack mold, the session that produced "U.S. Male" and "Too Much Monkey Business" benefited again from the guitar work of Jerry Reed (also see "Big Boss Man" and "Guitar Man"). Even if nobody told you, it's pretty easy to guess that "U.S. Male" is a Jerry Reed song. That Southern make-believe male bravado (which many apparently continue to take seriously, read some of the reviews out there!) is unmistakably Reed's doing, and Elvis wears the costume with pure joy! He takes a stab at imitating Reed's half-talking, half-singing comic style and has a blast with it, and Reed's guitar work is top-notch as usual. By the time it fades out to Elvis tellin' it like it is, he's planted his feet firmly in defiance against the movie image and he's ready to make himself a Comeback... son! :) |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)In "U.S. Male" Presley is again out-of-touch with contemporary thought. This is full of male chauvinism, and sung in a style which does not come off, although it became a hit. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 Elvis drawling about his manhood, in a countrified tune backed by Jerry Reed twanging away on guitar and Elvis in a talk-sing voice.
