"You'll Never Walk Alone", originally from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel, has since become a classic in both gospel and inspirational settings. Elvis had always loved Roy Hamilton's version of the song and had sang it at the piano at home quite often over the years. In 1967, he tackled it in the studio, again accompanying himself on piano. The result is one of Elvis' finest vocal performances, full of power and emotion but also care and craft. |
In 1971, RCA's budget label Camden released the Youll Never Walk Alone album, collecting the 4 songs from Elvis' 1957 Peace In The Valley EP as well as this title song, its flip-side, and some "sort-of-gospel" movie tunes. Despite it being a collection of left-overs from different sources, this one sold extremely well over the years, much like Camden's Christmas release. The budget price helped, no doubt, but the album is anchored by the 4 classic gospel songs from the '57 EP, and this outstanding title song. In the UK, Gerry and the Pacemakers had a big hit with the song in 1963, and it took on a second life as it soon became an anthem at Liverpool football matches, and eventually it caught on with other teams in Europe. The song is probably associated more with football in Europe today than anything to do with Elvis, Roy Hamilton, or Carousel. :) |

Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"You'll Never Walk Alone", an astonishing hit for Gerry Marsden (of Gerry and the Pacemakers) in 1963. Although Presley's performance is sincere, and possibly influenced by the Liverpool singer, the sound is out of focus and the result is not compelling. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 Elvis' version of this great song from the 1945 musical Carousel was based more on Roy Hamilton's 1954 cover than any of the others over the years. Elvis sings it with purity and power, accompanied by the Jordanaires. Full of impact and beauty, to the swelling crescendo and the soft fade. When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of a storm is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never, ever walk alone Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never, ever walk alone |
