Elvis does an outstanding take on the country ballad "There Goes My Everything", one of many top-notch performances on the Elvis Country album. Although it made the top ten of the U.S. country charts, it became a #6 pop hit in Britain. I'll write more later, but meanwhile, check out the music and links! |
Other Spins(What did the critics and fans say?)"There Goes My Everything", a country waltz, was a big hit for Engelbert Humperdinck in 1967; but this recording repeated Presley's success as of March 1971 when his version entered the charts. So far as the United Kingdom was concerned, where it reached number six, it was again a hit. Presley's breath control is amazing, as whole streches are sung with one breath; and the recording quality too is fine. Robert Matthew-Walker, Elvis Presley: A Study in Music, 1979 Former hits for Jack Greene (1966) and Engelbert Humperdinck (1967), a popular C&W ballad. Pleasant but unexceptional rendition, including a duet with one of the Imperials. There goes my only possession There goes my everything I hear footsteps slowly walking As they gently walk across the lonely floor And a voice is softly saying Darling this will be goodbye forever more There goes my reason for living There goes the one of my dreams There goes my only possession There goes my everything As my memory turns back the pages I can see the happy years we've had before Now the love that kept this ol' heart beating Has been shattered by the closing of the door |
